President Rodrigo Duterte was saddened by former Senator Miriam Santiago’s passing and said that he hopes that her legacy will guide the country in the future.

Duterte said, “She is best remembered as a graft buster ‘eating death threats for breakfast’ earning her the title Iron Lady of Asia. A constitutionalist, she has always been an advocate for the rule of law”.

He recalled a statement the former senator said during her time as Commission on Immigration and Deportation Chief under former president Corazon Aquino’s administration, that she ate death threats for breakfast as she put the agency in proper order.

Santiago ran for the presidency in 1992, but lost, whereas Fidel V. Ramos won. She ran again in 1998, but lost to former President Estrada. She tried her luck again in the 2016 elections, but again, never made it.

Although on an official state visit to Vietnam, President Duterte said these words, “Rest in peace, Madam Senator. May your legacy continue to guide this nation for many years to come.”.
