President Rodrigo Duterte recently warned mining firms of canceling their permits if their reforestation commitments are not done. He is very committed to bring great changes to our country, and that includes protecting our natural resources.

A mining company owned by the Gutierezes was one that Duterte identified to be causing so much damage in the environment in Agusan del Norte. The President even said a statement during a reunion with his San Beda classmates that went something like this, “Gutierez, you cannot destroyTubay in Agusan del Norte. You are supposed to plant trees. Ngayon, pag wala akong makita na kahoy tumutubo dyan, I’ll cancel your paper. Kung multinational ka…Wala.”

Actually, Duterte was referring to Miguel Alberto Gutierez and Eric Gutierez of San Roque Metals Inc. (SRMI).  And according to reports, the company is also involved in the questionable mining of nickel in Tubay, Agusan del Norte.

The authorities have ordered the small-scale mining company closed after discovering that the mining company exceeded the limit in the extraction of minerals.

President Duterte stated his point that he’s not into destroying the mining companies’ business. What he’s saying is that, they should obey the laws of our country.  He also said, “I do not intend to pull you down.  Basta lahat sumunod lang kayo sa batas. Walang bending”.
